By Anne Skove, Esq.
In Virginia, the governor postponed all state pay raises due to budgetary issues. But the judges will receive their raise, thanks to the separation of powers going on in the Commonwealth.
Judges might refuse the raise, though.
To promote, well, justice, Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leroy Hassell, for one, won't accept his raise.
According to one report, during a similar situation years ago some judges refused the raise. Others literally paid it forward and donated the money to charity. (Of course, some said "Thank you very much" and cried all the way to the bank.)
