Merck & Co. was ordered to pay over $253 million to the family of a man from Texas who died after taking Vioxx, a pain medication produced by the company. This was the first injury case to go to trial regarding Vioxx. Actual damages awarded were in the amount of $24.4 million, and punitive damages were $229 million. Ernst, et al v.
