  My wife was raised in a Jehovah's Witness family that forbid her from standing and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in elementary school.

  It took a lot of courage for a little girl to refuse to swear an oath to our nation in front of teachers who expressed their disgust and who would later be grading her homework.

  If given the chance, the general public would have quickly voted to force compliance.
