: The GavelVirginia Thomas Warned on Consumer Law
By Peter Hardin
Virginia consumer protection officials have sent Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a warning letter about her fledgling advocacy group and required compliance with state law.
Liberty Central Inc. is based in Virginia. That state’s Office of Consumer Affairs sent Virginia Thomas a letter that “directed Liberty Central, Inc. to the Virginia law that requires groups to register with the office or request an exemption before seeking donations for a charitable purpose,” according to a Los Angeles Times article.
A Virginia consumer protection official said Liberty Central is not registered, and it solicits donations online. Sue Hamblen, the group’s national coordinator, was quoted by the newspaper as saying she would look into the registration issue. You can learn more about the new group and Virginia Thomas’s involvement from Gavel Grab.
