Proof that the NFL has a long way to go in educating players about the life long consequences of brain injury and concussions

By Michael Kaplen

ADVERTISEMENTS

The process of education players about the dangers of brain injury and concussions is going to be a long and difficult job for the NFL.

One only has to read the Times interview with former New York Giants player, Amani Toomer who said that if he were still playing, he would not want to report a concussion ? even with what he knows now. ?If I had a concussion, a little one, I wouldn?t tell,?

He went on to say that he would want a child of his to report it. But for him, it?s different ? a personal decision that he would be willing to live with to keep his playing time, his job, his commitment to teammates.

Until the league is able to get across to its players the dangers of concussions and the life long consequences of brain trauma, needless injury and permanent brain damage will continue to occur. But, here's proof that you cannot rely upon the player himself or herself to report all their symptoms and when it is safe to return to play.

Remember,   WHEN IN DOUBT, KEEP THEM OUT
