NRA Opposes Confirming Kagan

The National Rifle Association, an influential lobbying force in Washington, has announced it opposes Elena Kagan’s Supreme Court nomination.

In a letter Thursday, NRA officials said Kagan has “repeatedly demonstrated a clear hostility” to gun rights in her career, according to an Associated Press article.

The White House responded by saying Kagan had pledged her respect for precedent in testifying this week about prior Supreme Court rulings and an individual’s right to bear arms; one of those decisions was issued Monday.

?Solicitor General Kagan made clear during the hearings that Heller and McDonald are the law of the land, and therefore that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual, fundamental right to bear arms,? the New York Times quoted Ben LaBolt, a White House spokesman, as saying.

Last year, the NRA unsuccessfully opposed the confirmation of Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, considering Kagan’s confirmation, began hearing testimony by outside witnesses Thursday.
