Financial Literacy Moments of 2010-10: What is a Structured Annuity?

By John Darer

ADVERTISEMENTS

Randall Shatto's definition of "structured annuity" on AnswerBag.com  is listed as a "professionally researched Great Answer". Here's what Randall says:

"A structured annuity is money you receive because of a settlement from a life insurance company or Treasury Bond Trust. When you are injured, you may obtain a payment settlement. This typically comes in the form of payments. If you use a life insurance company or the Treasury Bond Trust, you will receive your payments on a regular basis".

Comments:

  1. Payments from a Treasury Bond Trust are NOT a structured annuity
  2. An annuity is issued by a life insurance company
  3. There is no such thing as a "payment settlement". You may settle for a lump sum, periodic payments of a variety of different types or a combination with such payments being made to a variety of different types of payees (e.g. Special Needs Trust, Spendthrift Trust, to you personally)
  4. Payments can be regular or irregular

This author submitted the following answer to the question what is a structured annuity at AnswerBag.com

"A structured annuity is a type of qualified funding asset used to fund the payment of damages. A structured annuity is fully customizable allowing for many different types of payment streams. More than one payment stream is possible and can include immediate and deferred elements. Structured annuities are offered through a limited number of life insurance companies through specialists who are appointed brokers and agents.

Randall Shatto's "bona fides" on structured annuity was "cemented" with historical posts on:

  • How to Download Chinese Songs
  • How To Remove Peeling Skin From A Sunburn
  • How Do I Reset A Gateway BIOS Password
  • How To Clean a Leather watchstrap
  • How to Clean My Rabbit

A New York Post headline on the situation might conceivably read something like this:

No Patto on Backo For Shatto!

It's not that I mind that people outside of the industry try to feign expertise, but at least they can do the frickin' homework.
