Drug Envy

"Biologic drugs are the fastest-growing class of medicines, with more than $40 billion in annual sales in the U.S. But they're expensive, and the FDA has no authority to approve lower-cost, generic versions. That will change if the health care bill is signed into law."

Life sentences for teens are losing some appeal

"Their lawyers have long urged juries to give juvenile defendants a second chance. Now a growing number of states are rethinking the wisdom of sentencing teenagers to life in prison. Two states have recently passed and at least 11 states are considering legislation that would end life sentences for those under 18 years old."

Firms angle for advantage in Toyota cases

"Plaintiffs' lawyers are positioning themselves for a front seat in the mounting litigation over sudden unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles. Many of the lawyers have broken into camps based on which jurisdiction they believe should hear the multidistrict litigation against Toyota ? and, perhaps more important, which judge should decide the cases"

Phone-card case tests D.C. consumer law

"A lawsuit filed by Alan Grayson against AT&T on behalf of the taxpayers of Washington, D.C., has more than the phone companies concerned. A full panel of Washington's highest local court is preparing to consider whether private attorneys general like Grayson should be able to sue corporations under D.C.'s wide-reaching consumer protection law."

More Holder briefs not disclosed

"Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. did not list at least six U.S. Supreme Court briefs that a questionnaire asked him to disclose during his confirmation process in late 2008, the Justice Department acknowledged late Friday."

Study says vacancies to blame for massive immigration court backlog

"The failure of the Bush and Obama Administrations to fill immigration judge vacancies has driven the backlog of cases and wait times for decisions to all-time highs, according to a Syracuse University research organization. "

Full 1st Circuit rules prospectus statements are not attributable to executives for 10(b)(5) purposes

"The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit recently issued an en banc opinion that rejected the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's reliance on prospectus language in bringing a Rule 10(b)(5) case against broker-dealer executives. The decision overturned an earlier panel ruling upholding the SEC's use of the rule, which bars untrue statements in connection with the purchase or sale of a security."

Another attorney charged in Los Angeles insurance fraud sweep

"An attorney suspected in an automobile insurance fraud ring was arrested on Thursday by investigators for the Los Angeles County, Calif., district attorney's office."
