National Library Worker?s Day

By Sara

ADVERTISEMENTS

Today is National Library Worker’s Day!

This day is set aside to recognize the contributions of library workers everywhere, and is celebrated each year on the Tuesday of National Library Week.

At the Ross-Blakley Law Library, our Access Services employees connect patrons with materials, information and services, while the Reference department tackles tough research questions.  We?re working hard behind the scenes, too, with Technical Services staff purchasing and processing all the books and materials in the library, Government Documents staff processing Federal Depository materials, and Administration personnel making sure all the bills get paid and the building doesn?t fall apart. To celebrate our wonderful library workers, here are a few fun facts about some of our staff members:

 Name  Mari Bigler
 Department  Access Services
Do you have any weird habits?  I clean when I’m putting off writing essays for classes.
Do you have any secret talents?  Although it’s been a couple of years since I carved one, I can carve just about anything in a pumpkin if I’ve got semi-decent tools, a pattern, and a pumpkin at hand.
Tell us about your pet(s):  Owen is a two year old Dell desktop. He’s got more music on him than any computer should, thanks to my inability to resist a good CD. Sadly I don’t happen to have anything furrier, but Owen can probably run faster than most mountain goats.
What to you love about the library?  Books are what drew me to work at the library in the first place–my aunt still tells stories about my crying because I didn’t know how to read yet, and I was only three at the time. I can always find a book that intrigues me here, and I find the building itself fascinating, but it’s the people here that I’ve really come to love, from the students to the professors to members of the public to my coworkers. Almost without exception, everyone is fun to talk to and to be around.
A few fun facts:  I collect fairies…pictures, figures, stories, and more.
Dancing is my favorite form of exercise, closely followed by walking.
I prefer to buy shoes from thrift shops, because they come broken in.
I am more than passing fond of just about any kind of game other than poker. People want you to play for money in poker, and I prefer to play for the laughs.
If I could see any program offered at ASU that isn’t currently, it would be either Folklore or Storytelling, as both are loves of mine.

 Name  Beth DiFelice
 Department  Assistant Director
Do you have any secret talents?  my ability to consume large amounts of pizza
Tell us about your pet(s):  an old, fat, orange cat named Woody (who was once Law Pet of the Week)
What to you love about the library?  I can’t imagine working anywhere else
A few fun facts:  I’m from South Louisiana but lost my accent and can’t seem to get it back
I decided that 40+ is a good time to finally learn how to do a handstand
I crushed my big toe by dropping a frozen turkey on it

 Name  Alison Ewing
 Department  Reference
Do you have any weird habits?  I blow my nose very loudly for a very short person. My “walk” or rather my “shuffle” is very distinctive…..just ask Leslie! I can’t go to sleep at night without reading in bed (sign of a true librarian).
Tell us about your pet(s):  I have an absolutely darling little (6 lb. pooch) with a big name “Montgomery”. My intention was to have a pocketbook pooch and take him everywhere with me but unfortunately he gets motion sick…even in the pocketbook!
What to you love about the library?  I learn something new every single day of my life because of the library and the interesting things I get asked!
A few fun facts:  I like to dress up in vintage 1940’s clothes and do the jitterbug with my husband!
My 7 grandkids live all over the place: Thailand, Montana, Illinois and I love visiting them!
I love to golf, walk, bicycle and fish and do just about anything outside.
I love to play games, you name it, I like it…especially card games. Bridge anyone?

 Name  Sara Lipich
 Department  Administration
Do you have any weird habits?  I cover my ears whenever a moth is flying around nearby (I have an incredibly specific phobia about moths flying into my ears)
Tell us about your pet(s):  I have a 9 1/2 year old shelter rescue mixed breed dog named Max. He is quite quirky and neurotic and absolutely the light of my life.
What to you love about the library?  I have always loved the smell of old books, and the thought of all that information just waiting to be discovered! I also love the people that work in libraries, especially this one.
A few fun facts:  My eyes change color depending on what color I’m wearing.
My all-time favorite movie is The Goonies.
   I love Brussels sprouts!
My absolute favorite annual event is the short film festival at the ASU Art Museum
(It’s free, and it’s coming up on Saturday, April 18th!)
I love making things in muffin tins. There’s a lot more you can make in them besides muffins and cupcakes! Muffin-shaped food is just better.

 Name  Nicole Sandberg
 Department  Access Services
Tell us about your pet(s):  We have three kitties - Windsor, Wilfred (Freddy) and Isabel (Izzy). Windsor is very laid back and affectionate; Freddy is serious and cautious, but very cuddly; and Izzy loves to play ‘ball’ - if you toss a bouncy-ball down the hallway she brings it back to you; she would spend all day doing that if she could.
What to you love about the library?  The patrons of course! I also like being surrounded by books - I’m always on the lookout for a new subject to read about
A few fun facts:  I love to read. I go through little phases where I read a bunch of books on strange topics like viruses or diseases, the Mafia, or biographies of British Monarchs.
I want to visit Alaska someday - maybe even live there.
I’m working on my Master’s in Library Science, and will graduate in May 2009.
