Man On Trial Escapes, Judge Keeps The Case Going

By David Badertscher, PLL

"What should a judge do when a man on trial in his

court decides to make an easy escape from custody?

It happened this week in Baltimore. After a

transportation mixup, a corrections officer took Marcus

Anderson, a drug dealer facing gun charges, from

prison to court with a van that lacked security features,

including handcuffs, reports the Baltimore Sun. When

she stopped at a red light in Baltimore, Anderson

leaped out and ran away. With no cell phone or radio,

she couldn't call for help.

Judge Charles Bernstein allowed his trial to move

forward anyway. 'If I were a young enterprising

criminal, I'd come to Baltimore to set up my practice,'

he said.  'This is the place to be. This is the Promised

Land.'  He added: Defendants just can't think, 'I don't

want to go to trial today. I'm going to escape.'"
