: New York Supreme Court Criminal Term LibraryJudges Defend Director, Call News Of Fraud Case Misleading
By David Badertscher, PLL
Source: Crime and Justice News, May 2, 2008.
"Allegedly misleading news accounts about a settlement in a federal fraud case have caused 'distress' at the Reno-based National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, says council president Susan Carbon. In a letter to Nevada State Sen. William Raggio, Carbon says the council does not believe that the allegations by a former employee that resulted in a $300,000 settlement were substantiated. She conceded that changes were made in the group's record keeping and administrative policies and procedures."
"Carbon discussed the hiring of executive director Mary Mentaberry's husband to handle real estate issues from 1997 to 2001. Carbon noted that Mentaberry did not become director until 2004 and that her husband was not paid by the council but rather by a building owner. Said Carbon: "There were no findings of fraud, intentional mishandling of funds, or conflict of interest and neither the [council] nor Ms. Mentaberry admitted to any wrongdoing. The parties made a business decision to settle these issues.' Carbon said Mentaberry' has the full support and confidence of our organization's leadership.' The council did not specify what news accounts were misleading or provide further documents."
