: Stark County Law Library Blawg"Characteristics of a Killer SaaS Application"
Posted by Dennis Heckman: "Most Web-based, SaaS applications are still immature. But it is worth asking the question, aside from feature set (which is expanding very rapidly and obviously differs with different types of programs), what would make a "cloud" application really attractive.
1. The immediate selling point is the web-based nature of the program...
2. Backup to local servers...
3. Off-line capabilities...
Aside from this key functionality, obviously you need to examine the company closely. What happens to your data if it goes out of business (this has happened a significant number of times)? What happens to your data if you decide to discontinue the service (this is where backup to local servers comes in). These are basic issues before you decide on a cloud-based application.
As these programs mature, a combination of local backup (and accessibility) and off-line capabilities will be key to making a program really stand out."
