Changes to Copyright Act on the Horizon?

By Donna Nixon

ADVERTISEMENTS
Are changes to the Copyright act way overdue? Professor Laura N. Gasaway and a national group appointed by the Librarian of Congress say yes. The group, the Section 108 Study Group, just issued a report recommending some important changes to help bring Copyright into the digital age. But the group had trouble coming to consensus on the most contentious issues because the members represented a broad range of often opposing interests, from the Disney Company, Universal Mastering Studios and publishing companies to various library organizations and university presses. Their focus was on Section 108 of theAct, which determines whether and how libraries can borrow, lend, copy and archive materials for their patrons.

Why should you care? Because, it directly affects the law library's ability to quickly and efficiently provide articles and other documents to students doing research papers or notes for a journal, law journals doing edits, and research assistants and professors working on scholarly writing, just to name a few. Check out the Executive Summary of the report.

Will Congress pass the recommendations into legislation? Stay tuned.
