Trial opens in arson-murder case

By Jonathan Hayter

ADVERTISEMENTS
The trial of a man accused of setting a series of fires in the San Gorgonio Pass in 2006 that killed five firefighters began on Thursday in Riverside County Superior Court.

Opening statements began, along with the testimony of a witness, in the trial of Raymond Lee Oyler, who faces the death penalty. Prosecutors have charged Oyler, 38, with 45 counts, including murder and arson, for setting the Esperanza fire and 22 others from May through October 2006. Oyler's defense team claimed that there were multiple arsonists striking the area and no solid evidence to link Oyler to the Esperanza Fire.  Oyler has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Oyler was "a man bent on destruction, with a desire to be so important, so great, that he was willing to unleash a disaster of his own making, to take the lives of five men," said Deputy District Attorney Michael Hestrin, who is prosecuting the case. Defense lawyer Mark McDonald told jurors not to get caught up by the emotion of the event.
