San Fernando Valley man freed from life sentence

Bruce Lisker has been serving a life sentence for the March 1983 stabbing and beating death of his 66-year-old mother, Dorka, at her Sherman Oaks home. U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips in Riverside overturned his conviction Friday, concurring with a March opinion by a U.S. magistrate judge, who determined that Los Angeles County prosecutors used "false evidence" to convict the man.

In recommending that Lisker's conviction be overturned, U.S. Magistrate Judge Ralph Zarefsky found in March that Lisker's defense lawyer, now a court commissioner, performed poorly during the trial, meaning Lisker was deprived of his constitutional right to effective counsel.

Vicki Podberesky, one of Lisker's attorneys, said "we expect him out sometime this week."
