Peanut Butter Recalled, Possibly Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

ADVERTISEMENTS

A nationwide outbreak of salmonella has sickened at least 400 people, and "King Nut" and "Parnell's Pride" peanut butter possibly linked to the same salmonella strain has been recalled by an Ohio-based food distributor.

The reported infections of Salmonella serotype Typhimurium began between September 3 and December 31, 2008, with most illnesses beginning after October 1st, and 18 percent of reported cases requiring hospitalization, according to a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Press Release updated on January 9th. The CDC, FDA, and state health officials are working to pinpoint the exact source of the salmonella outbreak.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports that salmonella has been detected in an opened five-pound tub of "King Nut" brand peanut butter, and distributor King Nut Companies has issued a voluntary recall asking its customers "to remove all King Nut peanut butter and Parnell's Pride peanut butter from the market." The Washington Post reports that the peanut butter recall "could be the breakthrough in the search for the source of a salmonella outbreak that has struck in 42 states so far," noting that the recalled peanut butter had been distributed to schools and hospitals.
