: Legal Pad | LAMilberg Weiss gets highest ranking for securities settlements in 2007
By Jason Siegel
Two San Diego firms were among the top five plaintiff law firms on RiskMetric Groups's 2007 list, ranking firms by the total dollar amount of final securities class action settlements in 2007.
The list, highlighted by the Wall Street Journal's Law Blog (here), ranks Milberg Weiss as #1 in total settlement value ($3,804,625,000), #2 in total number of settlements (17), and #3 in average value per settlement ($223,801,471).
Coughlin Stoia was #1 in total number of settlements (49) and #4 in total settlement value ($1,853,990,000).
RiskMetric's blog noted its surprise at the rankings of two firms with Southern California offices.
Bernstein Litowitz, who has offices in San Diego, New York, New Jersey
and Louisiana, was #4 in total number of settlements (10). The blog claimed this was unexpected since the firm is known to be very selective in choosing cases. The firm was also #5 in both
total settlement value ($1,338,110,000) and average value per
settlement ($133,811,000).
It was the first time the Weiss & Lurie, who has offices in Los Angeles and New York, was in the top 5 for a category on the list. It tied for #5 in number of settlements (9).
