Three High-Profile Legal Eagles Take Flight

By Dan Slater

ADVERTISEMENTS

moversThree high-profile legal eagles are on the move. Here’s the Law Blog round-up:

  • Cliff Stricklin. Cliff Stricklin (pictured, center) is going private. The 42 year-old federal prosecutor who spearheaded the successful prosecution of former Qwest CEO Joseph Nacchio for insider-trading, will join Denver-based Holland & Hart as a commercial and securities litigator. Stricklin also played a leading role on the feds’ Enron Task Force. According to reports, Stricklin (Baylor, Washington & Lee School of Law) will join the firm in late spring after he returns from a Department of Justice mission to Bangladesh, where he’ll advise local authorities on how to fight corruption. Here are stories from the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News.
  • Ronald Hopkinson. Latham & Watkins, known for its solid relationship with private equity giant Carlyle, might stand to lose some of that business when the law firm’s global head of private equity, Ronald Hopkinson (pictured, right), 44, moves downtown to join Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, located one elevator bank away from the Law Blog Headquarters. In 2006, Hopkinson (Harvard, Harvard Law), advised a consortium of Carlyle and five other buyers, including the Blackstone Group and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, in their $10.3 billion take-private of Dutch media company VNU. Here’s the story from the NYLJ’s Tony Lin. Our big question: Will he get into the office as early as Cadwalader colleague Dennis Block?
  • Robert Lavet. Finally, last week, Sallie Mae’s lawyer-in-chief, Robert Lavet (pictured, left), 53, resigned after 16 years with the student lender. The departure came three days after Sallie Mae finally accepted that its deal to be taken private by J.C. Flowers for $25.3 billion wasn’t going to happen. Lavet and Sallie Mae told Corporate Counsel that he was leaving for personal reasons, not because of the highly-publicized failed buyout.
