: Law Blog - WSJ.comHarvard JD Roger Ferguson Tapped as New TIAA-CREF Head
By Ashby Jones
Lawyers everywhere, take a page from the Hillary Clinton campaign and cue the Rocky soundtrack – it’s turning into a downright inspired week for the profession. Earlier in the week, UBS announced it was nominating one of our gang, Peter Kurer, to take over as chairman. And today, retirement-services behemoth TIAA-CREF tapped a lawyer, Roger Ferguson (pictured), to become its new chief executive. (Here’s the early WSJ report.)
Ferguson (Harvard, Harvard Law) hasn’t practiced law in a while. He arrives at TIAA-CREF from insurer Swiss Re, where he’d served as head of financial services. Before joining Swiss Re, Ferguson served as vice chairman of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve System.
It’s all very impressive. But we here at the Law Blog are equally impressed with his tour-of-duty as an associate at Davis Polk, where he worked from 1981-84. Also of note: After he stepped down at the Federal Reserve, rumors swirled that he might get tapped as Harvard’s next president (a rumor we happily picked up on back in early ‘06).
