Georgetown to Lose Lederman and Katyal to OLC, SG?s Office

By Dan Slater

ADVERTISEMENTS

The capital’s most high profile law school is sending two of its best to government:

Lederman to OLC: ledermanGeorgetown’s Marty Lederman — whom legal blog fanatics will recognize from the Balkinization blog — has been appointed Deputy Assistant AG in the Office of Legal Counsel. There, reports Balkinization, he’ll be joined by two of his former OLC colleagues, Dawn Johnsen, nominated to be head of the office; and David Barron, who will serve as the Principal Deputy. From 1994 to 2002, Lederman (UMich, Yale Law) was an Attorney Advisor in the Office of Legal Counsel.

Katyal to follow Kagan to SG’s office: KOn Saturday, Legal Times reported that Georgetown law prof Neal Katyal, of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, will has been appointed principal deputy solicitor general, the office’s No. 2 spot behind Elena Kagan. “Katyal’s appointment is another strong signal of President-elect Barack Obama’s intentions to depart sharply from the terrorist detention and interrogation policies of the Bush administration,” writes the BLT blog. From 1998 to 1999, notes BLT, Katyal (Dartmouth, Yale Law) served as Deputy AG Eric Holder Jr.’s national security adviser in the Justice Department. (Photo: AP)
