: Legal Pad | LAFurloughs for deputy AGs
By Richard Binder
A Sacramento County Superior Court judge said Thursday that California's deputy attorneys general can be furloughed twice a month just like any other state worker.
Judge Patrick Marlette, in affirming a tentative ruling he issued in the morning, said Thursday afternoon that state law gives the governor restricted power to furlough all civil service employees, including those who work for constitutional officers. The state's recent budget crisis and economic troubles are adequate reasons for the work furlough, Marlette said.
Consequently, approximately 1,000 deputy attorneys general will lose two days of pay each month, an amount equal to roughly 9 percent of their salary. Deputy AGs' salaries already lag far behind those of attorneys in other public agencies, particularly in the state's metropolitan areas. Entry level pay for a starting deputy AG is $56,088.
