: Legal Pad | LACarona retires to keep pro bono representation
By Jason Siegel
Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona, indicted on federal corruption charges, retired yesterday (Watch).
Carona said he retired to accept $2.5 million worth of free legal services. A complaint was filed against him claiming that Jones Day's offer to defend him for free constituted a gift above the legal limit for public officials. Jones Day's Brian Sun, a prominent defense attorney, agreed to represent Carona for free in December.
No ruling on the complaint had been made by the California Attorney General or the state Fair Political Practices Commission, The Orange County Register reported.
Carona is indicted on charges that he took about $700,000 in bribes and kickbacks.
Carona will receive a $200,000 per year pension.
