: Legal Pad | LAAG Brown agrees to proposed program cuts by state budget committee
By Jason Siegel
Attorney General Jerry Brown agreed to eliminate several programs, including a crime prevention program with ties to his father, as the state tries to fill a $17 billion budget deficit, The Recorder reported.
A state Senate budget committee voted to cut funding for the Crime and Violence Prevention Center that was launched in 1952 by then-Attorney General Pat Brown.
They also voted to eliminate the Office of Victim Services, the Office of Native American Affairs and 100 vacant jobs at the Department of Justice. Despite objections from department leaders, the senate committee additionally passed cuts that would eliminate the department's gang-suppression task force and $5 million from its anti-methamphetamine campaign.
The cuts still need full legislative approval.
