Does It Matter that Your Website is Outdated?

Geocities, once king of the ‘build it yourself’ website business, has closed it’s doors.
It’s not surprising really, in today’s age of blogs and Twitter, Geocities was obviously a dinosaur just waiting for extinction.  It served it’s purpose, trailblazing the idea of a personal space on the web.  But today’s web is quite different than the days of Geocities, more social and less static.

So, imagine my surprise while doing some surfing this weekend to stumble across not one, but several business sites still built in the manner of those early Geocities sites.

You know, the ones with the fancy, sometimes flowery background, the awkward table driven layout and  sappy elevator music that automatically plays.  Usually the theme from Titanic.

Thinking that no one could possibly still be using these ancient websites for anything, much less a business, I suspected I had stumbled on an old business website that people had forgotten to redirect.  I was wrong. These were legitimate websites, still operating like it was the early 90’s .

Why is this so bad? After all, at least they have a web presence right?

You tell me.  Imagine the following…

You’re ready to purchase a new computer.  You’re the instant gratification type, so you want to purchase it locally so you can take it home and set it up today.  You head down to the local computer store excited to spend your hard earned cash.  As you walk through the door a bell rings above your head and you immediatly notice that all of the display computers are old units with the big bulky monitors.  Even the few laptops on display are big and bulky compared to what you know is out there today. In fact nothing in the store seems to be up to date.  To your left is a cheerful man standing at cash register the likes of which you haven’t seen since 1989 and the music drifting in the air is circa 1984.

It’s not likely you’ll be buying your new computer there is it?

Well that’s exactly how potential clients and customers feel when they click on your link only to land on an outdated webpage.

I’m not just talking Geocities styled websites, I’m talking any website that clearly has just been sitting and collecting dust.  A business site is no longer a set it and forget it situation. There really is no excuse for not bringing your website into the new century. With Wordpress you can quickly and easily rebuild that old, static website into a fresh, new and active blogsite.  If you’re not familiar with the benefits of having a business blogsite vs a regular website, you can find out more here, and here .

If you’re fearful of being able to create a new site, don’t be.  Take it from someone who used to have a site on Geocities, Wordpress is easier.  Much, much easier. And if you don’t  want to try to personalize your blogsite yourself, hiring someone to build you a Wordpress blogsite is generally less expensive than hiring a web designer to create a traditional website.

So you see, there really is no excuse for not having an up to date blogsite that helps turn your visitors into clients and customers. If your website is stuck in the past, take a hint from Geocities and send it the way of the dinosaur.
