: PrawfsHiring Freeze Roundup: The Meat Market is Murder
By Dan Markel, Ethan Leib, Rick Garnett, Matt Bodie, Paul Horwitz , Steve Vladeck, and Orly Lobel
All eyes in legal academia will soon turn from Chicago and Phoenix to the bad old Marriot Wardman Park, where later this week hiring committees will subject would-be professors to the "Meat Market" gauntlet. In these tough economic times, universities nationwide have either embraced, or may soon be compelled to embrace, budget cuts and limits on hiring.
Here's a round-up of universities with law schools that have reportedly instituted hiring freezes or limits for faculty (building on Al Brophy's post from the Faculty Lounge and Dan Markel's open thread on hiring from this blog). Please add corrections, explanations, additions and clarifications in the comments, and I will incorporate them as updates to the post.
Hiring freezes have been announced at:
Boston University (does not apply to searches underway)
The University of Colorado (potential hiring freeze/"careful" hiring)
The University of Connecticut (interviewing full schedule)
The University of Hawai`i (freeze in "most hiring")
The University of Oklahoma ("...hiring would continue. However, few hires would be made and new hires would go through a rigorous screening process...")
The University of South Carolina
The University of Toledo (additional restrictions on hiring but no outright freeze)
Temple University (law school not subject to hiring freeze)
