Books All Law Professors Should Read?

By Dan Markel, Ethan Leib, Rick Garnett, Matt Bodie, Paul Horwitz , Steve Vladeck, and Orly Lobel

ADVERTISEMENTS

In high school, an excellent teacher showed us a list of books that top college professors believed incoming freshman should (have) read.

What books do law professors expect other law professors to have read? When you present at a faculty workshop, for example, what knowledge can you assume on the part of colleagues? I am talking about scholarly law books, not general books. Do we have a canon, or are we all so specialized that all that links us as a discourse community is the 1L curriculum and our experiences on the AALS jobs market?

Let?s create a list of books - and law review articles - that ?all law professors should (have) read.?

We can later move to different subject areas, i.e., books and law review articles that all Evidence professors should read, or all Property professors should read, etc.

List away!
