Wisconsin Solo & Small Firm Conference a Smash Hit

By Ross

ADVERTISEMENTS

Good morning folks – we’re mostly happy here in Packerland after embarrassing the Jets. I say “mostly” happy because it wasn’t exactly pretty, without a single touchdown scored.

But I digress. Major kudos to the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Bar Association for a great success in the 2010 iteration of the Wisconsin Solo & Small Firm Conference. Jon Groth, this year’s conference chair and his team, along with State and Milwaukee Bar staff drew about 250 attendees to a four-track event. As the conference’s founder, it’s especially gratifying to see how this event continues to grown and improve.

Special acknowledgement to Wisconsin attorney, Lowell Sweet, recipient of the 2nd annual John Lederer Solo & Small Firm Service Award. Lowell has practiced law in Elkhorn, Wisconsin for well over 50 years. He’s been a real pioneer in the area of legal technology and law practice management and was one of my earliest mentors when I was heavily involved in State Bar of Wisconsin activities many moons ago. John Lederer would have loved the choice of Lowell as a recipient of his namesake award. Congratulations Lowell – you still are my hero after all these years.

I had the pleasure of presenting twice at the conference. My first program was the national debut of my new session, “The Five Bs: The Right Reasons for Technology in Your Practice: Best Practices, Better Profitability, Battling Malpractice, Brainy Ethics and a Blissful Life” (materials can be downloaded here). From the feedback from the attendees, it really seemed to strike a chord. My second program was with techno.pal Nerino Petro, Jr. from the State Bar of Wisconsin – we did a rollicking Saturday morning program about Microsoft Office 2010 – materials downloadable from here.

So again, way to go Wisconsin – next year’s Solo & Small Firm Conference will again be held the last weekend in October in the picturesque Wisconsin Dells. It’s worth attending, even if you’re not a Wisconsin lawyer – a national caliber event.
