Ventura Running for Minnesota Senate?

ADVERTISEMENTS
Rumor mills are pumping that Jesse Ventura, former Governor of Minnesota, may run for the Senate this fall against Norm Coleman and Al Franken.

Here's the numbers breakdown:

A recent state poll has Coleman leading with 52 percent of the vote and Franken with 40 percent.

A hypothetical race with Ventura shows Coleman with 41 percent, Franken with 31 percent and Ventura with 23 percent.

Two points:

(1) expect Franken to close that gap substantially. Even though his campaign has struggled, Obama is going to win Minnesota by a healthy margin, and Coleman is going to need a lot of crossover Dems to go his way to win. I think he'll pull it out, but I predict a 51/49 race.

(2) Jesse Ventura was polling at 7% in June 1998 in Gubernatorial Race polls. He won the election with 37% of the vote (defeating, incidentally, Norm Coleman). One of the few times people were genuinely shocked by the outcome of an election in recent memory.
