Seriously Guys We're Going to Win

By Andrea

ADVERTISEMENTS

Barack Obama is ahead. He's way ahead. He's ahead in states no one ever thought he'd be ahead in. He is, if advanced data collection means anything at all, and it does, going to win the presidency. So how do all my Democratic friends feel about it?

Paranoid, frightened, and near-hysterical with anxiety, if the last two weeks of my life are any indication. I am not exaggerating when I say that I have had conversations with at least six different people that were basically like this:

Person: I am so nervous.
Me: We're going to win. Yay! This is so exciting.
Person: Really??? I'm so scared. I don't want to jinx it.
Me: Uh, we're really far ahead. In the electoral college. It's cool.
Person: How do you know?? AAHHH.
Me: I read the polls. Seriously. It's not that close. Take a breath.
Person: Okay. (Leaves totally unconvinced.)

Today, a lawyer detailed for me exactly how many points we were going to "lose" from voter suppression and racism, and said she needed a Valium for the next 2 weeks. You guys, IT'S OKAY. Republicans are not evil sprites with all-powerful vote-stealing wands. Look at the numbers. We are going to win.

Am I saying you shouldn't give money, or especially, your time to the Obama campaign if you can? Absolutely not. Be part of this movement. Locking in a win for sure is awesome, plus high Democratic voter turnout will be good for down-ballot races and propositions. Just do whatever you're doing with some optimism and pride instead of complete panic. Let's enjoy this time. BREATHE!
