Return from the South

ADVERTISEMENTS
Highlights of the family vacation:

* K learned how to walk!! Like crawling, he progressed gradually with walking -- he's been standing up on his own for months and cruising for even longer, and for a while he's been willing to take one step in between holding on to things. Then, for a week or two, he would take two steps. The first day of vacation I saw him take three steps. The next day, four steps. By the end of the week, he was staggering across the room, occasionally plopping down for a rest. (Any recommendations for outdoor shoes?)

* K rode on a bike for the first time. He didn't like it much.

* I re-learned how to ride a bike. I used to ride my bike all the time as a kid, then I didn't for years, then a couple of times in a row I ended up on the ground with big gashes on my legs (on borrowed bikes that were much too big for me), then I didn't ride again for years. We rented bikes and rode all around and it felt pretty good.

* K bonded with (and got licked by) his dog-cousin Harley, a Rottweiler. Harley was surprisingly tolerant of the little person who chased her around and shrieked with delight whenever she came near. K had a snotty nose all week and I think he may be allergic to pets like Mommy and Daddy.

* Flights in both directions were terrible, baby-wise. I hope we don't have to fly again with him for a very long time. Next time we will spring for a separate seat. K is not a fall-asleep-in-your-lap sort of baby.

* I paid $80 for the privilege of bringing my Internal Revenue Code along on vacation. On the way back we wised up and packed it in K's bag. On the way there, when they told us we had to pay for an overweight bag, we panicked and paid up -- K was already starting to yell and I had forgotten about the giant book in our suitcase. At least I managed to get a good amount of studying done on vacation.
