The New York Times recently described the logistical difficulties the Democrats are having in regards to the convention. The highlight of the story was, for me, the following:
A 28-page contract requested by Denver organizers that caterers provide food in ?at least three of the following five colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple and white.? Garnishes could not be counted toward the colors. No fried foods would be allowed. Organic and locally grown foods were mandated, and each plate had to be 50 percent fruits and vegetables. As a result, caterers are shying away.
I understand the political ramifications of campaign purchasing. For example, if you?re a Democrat, you've got to have the union "bug" (logo) on your business cards, leaflets, and other printed items. So, in the name of real-world politics, the whole "organic" and "local grown" mandate can be explained away as appeasement of important campaign constituencies ... whatever they might be.
What I find fascinating is the insistence that no fried foods be present, and that half of all foods be either fruits or vegetables. I am not aware of any anti-fried food faction within the party, and I am equally ignorant of any bloc that insists on a delicately arranged, selectively colored, food-o-rama at public events. Indeed, I?d venture to guess the vast majority of Americans regularly enjoy fried food, and partake in generous servings of meats, grains, and dessert.
It strikes me that this contract portrays the Democrats in exactly the manner they wish to avoid: as (1) extravagant, wasteful spendthrifts; and (2) horribly out of touch with the common man.
Remember: Grey Poupon doesn?t count towards the "color quota."
