Outlook 2003/2007 & Gmail

I have made several attempts to switch from POP access to IMAP for Gmail but have been unsuccessful. Although GMail IMAP works just fine via Apple Mail, iPhone, and even Thunderbird, it simply does not have good performance through Outlook.

Could this be becuase of the various Outlook plug-ins (e.g. X1 search) I use? Or, is there some other tweak (e.g. timeout values, etc.) that are keeping this from working right. Any help/insight (other than switching email clients) would be appreciated.
