Interesting Interests

ADVERTISEMENTS
In the course of adding an "Interests" section to my resume, I was struck by an unpleasant realization. I have become a boring person.

Somewhere in the tangle of law school and fatherhood, I've lost track of many things that used to define me. Law school leaves little time for introspection.

I used to be a much more fun-loving person. When my wife and I were in Chicago we ran our own comedy website (peak traffic: 2500 unique visitors per day). It's hard to find time to be silly, now, but I suspect I was much happier that way. Time to break out the karaoke, stop rambling to captive audiences about copyright, and start living real life again. Maybe I'll learn a new language or start getting naked to take the garbage out. That'll teach the world to hold me back.

My ultimate fear, I think, was addressed in Buffalo Wings & Vodka's (legendary, in my eyes) final post: "Try to remember that, yes, we are going into a humorless business full of uptight, soulless pricks. But it can only stay a business full of uptight, soulless pricks if we all in fact become uptight, soulless pricks." Similarly, law school can change you but only if you allow it to change you.

As I move into the profession, I check myself more than I ever have. I firmly believe law students are overconcerned with... well, pretty much everything... and I'm determined to shake off that influence. I'm comfortable with myself, with my plans, and with my opinions, and the hell with all this endless worrying. For 13 months I've been convinced that I found a great balance between law school and real life, but I realize now that law school has become a swollen monstrosity that dominates my thoughts. I have temporal balance, but I need mental balance. Not, you know, that I consider myself "mentally unbalanced." You know what I mean.

So there it is. "Serious" and "silly" are not mutually exclusive states of being. Now I'm going to go air guitar to the remaining 2 minutes of Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" before reorganizing my huge stack of printed law review articles.

This blog should get more interesting.
