There has been has been significant discussion on the "Internets" regarding the pros/cons of going with a software-as-a-service (SaaS) EHR vendor. I don't want to jump into these religious wars but I would like to comment regarding what has not been part of the discussion, and that is how a SaaS EHR vendor may help significantly reduce a provider's or facility's compliance burden (especially true for small providers and facilities).

How? Because much of the burden (although clearly not all) of complying with HIPAA's Security Rule, which is now mandated by the HITECH Act, can be shifted to you business associate partner. This may not sound like a big deal but this is simply because the healthcare industry, as a whole, has yet to awaken to the commpliance challenge contained within the Security Rule.

So if you are interested in getting paid your HITECH EHR incentives one way to get there sooner rather than later is to pick one of the EHR SaaS vendors that is likely to survive the industry consolidation that is certain to occur.
