The Grasshopper and the Palm.

By Steve Pirates

ADVERTISEMENTS

Living in an apartment with no backyard is always a bummer for someone who loves nature and greenery as much as Katie and I do. We have a nine square feet large balcony where I’ve put out a few plants. I have a lily, a mexican sage, and a phoenix palm. I really like my plants. I like gardening, pruning and watering, the whole nine yards… or nine square feet… whatever.

Today, Kate and I got home from Arcadia (city motto: It’s Hot.) I went to check on my plants, since there had been a heatwave this weekend. The winds had blown over the lily, so I set it right side up again. I noticed that my palm tree had a visitor. There was (and still is) a grasshopper attached to one of the fronds, munching on my palm. Now, I know for a fact that grasshoppers eat plants.

I’ve been trying to convince Mr. Grasshopper to leave my plant before he eats any more of the palm fronds. Advice to all you city gardeners out there. Don’t put your face too close to grasshoppers. They like to jump on your noses…. and then jump back onto the palm you’re trying to rescue from the locust.
