Goodbye old friend

ADVERTISEMENTS
We threw out our "dining room" rug today. (We don't actually have a room, just a corner at the edge of the kitchen.) It wasn't a particularly nice rug, but it predated our relationship. JW bought it for twenty bucks at Target during college. It followed us from dorm room to apartment to house, where it finally succumbed to a full year of toddler abuse. RIP, rug. You have served us well.

I also met a fellow Harvard blogger today. He's entering his senior year of college and making big decisions about what to do next. I don't think I had a clear idea of what I wanted out of a career at that stage in my life. We talked about how Harvardians feel driven to excel, to be somebody, which is not something that ever occurred to me until I got to law school and people kept giving us speeches about how we'd be important someday. I think that impulse is even stronger among the undergrads. Which I find impressive, but a little scary.

And I made tuna casserole today. So you can see it was an eventful day.

I haven't blogged in a while, so here is the capsule summary:

Done with the summer job at The Firm. I'll be back there after I graduate. I really like the place, love the people, and am excited about returning. But I'm anxious about the schedule and how that will affect my family.

Currently working part-time for a professor, spending extra time with K, mediating twice a week, running errands, and hanging out. I have pretty much the entire month off. It sounded like a long time, but my first week off has gone by in a blur.

We always wanted two kids, but now we're questioning whether we really want another one. I think we go through phases with this. We agreed to re-evaluate when K is 3.

K is doing great, growing lots of teeth, meowing like a cat, trying to learn how to jump, climbing everywhere, and walking down the stairs holding on to the rail (because going down on your butt is so undignified). We taught him to say "Mahna Mahna," and then we sing "Doo doo doo-doo doo-doo."

Now that I have more time to spend with K, we've been hanging out at the park and the library and other toddler-infested places. I keep seeing these enormous children who are only a week or two older than my tiny guy. JW sometimes worries about how small K is, but I usually brush him off. It's harder to just ignore it, though, when a giant boy stomps over in his 18-month size clothes and K, 12-month T-shirt hanging off him, tries to grab his truck away. He's healthy and all, but let's face it: nobody in our extended family is bumping their head on the door frame. I just hope I haven't doomed him to a life of being 5'3".

Looking forward to my last semester of law school. I think it'll be more work than I had planned, because I can't resist doing one more time-consuming clinical before I graduate. But I'll still be at daycare by 5 at the latest every day, unlike when I start working.
