Education Reform: Rep. Ron Paul

By 3L at Seton Hall University School of Law and Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review.

ADVERTISEMENTS
Congressman Ron Paul's plan to reform education is to "abolish the unconstitutional, wasteful Department of Education." Unfortunately, that is about the extent of his articulated plan to improve education. He cites to his efforts in Congress to increase tax deductions to offset the cost of attendance at non-public schools. He also points to a bill he sponsored offering a $3000 tax credit for teachers, as well as a bill creating a full tax deduction for undergraduate college tuition.

He doesn't point to any education-related legislation he has sponsored which was approved in Congress; how he will attract talented and committed teachers in the hardest-to-staff classrooms; or how to address the achievement gap. Neither does he seem to make any effort to differentiate his ideas to support those most in need (i.e., granting full college tuition tax deductions rather than targeted deductions).
