After an hour or so of research and typing, I hear some shuffling outside the door. Then someone fiddling with the screen door, and finally the doorbell. I know it's the kid next door wanting to know if K can come out and play, but I think, he usually doesn't ring the bell, and what if it's a package I need to sign for? So I take a peek. Sure enough, a little blond head is pressed right up against the glass. And he sees me, so I have to answer the door.
But he doesn't ask about K. He says, "My dog is lost! Can you help me find her?" "How did she get lost?" I ask, and he launches into a long and befuddling explanation. He ends with another plea for help, so I say, "Um, I guess so," and he waits patiently while I put on my shoes and grab my keys.
Once outside, he insists, "We have to run!" and takes off down the sidewalk. Every half block or so, he keeps shouting, "Run! Run!" And I have to wonder if he's putting me on, because he doesn't seem to be looking for his dog at all. Eventually we circle back to his house and he says, "Oh, my sister found the dog." There is no sister or dog to be seen, so I ask, "How do you know?" He mumbles something, skipping off to his backyard.
Okay, universe, I get it. No more skipping workouts.
