The Candor of Barack Obama

In a news conference today, Obama characterized the race:

?We are less of an underdog than we were two weeks ago,? Mr. Obama told reporters here. ?Two weeks ago, we were a big underdog, now we?re a slight underdog.?

This strikes me as exactly right. And it's comparatively trivial statements like this that give Obama such immense credibility. On big policy issues like the war, he is widely lauded for telling a politically unpopular truth. Here, he declines the opportunity to score political points (by, say, trumpeting a victory or lowering expectations) in favor of a clear-eyed assessment of the race. But why? Could it be...Integrity?
