CNN GOP Debate

By pharrell

ADVERTISEMENTS
I didn't watch the GOP debate last night (hey, I'm a Democrat), but I have some sympathy for Republicans irate that CNN and YouTube offered up a number of questions from known supporters of various Democratic presidential candidates. What seems particularly galling to the right is that the prevalence of Democratic questions focused the debate on the issues that Democrats think matter to Republicans--guns, god, abortion, and gays--rather more than the issues that many Republicans think matter to republicans (national security; lower taxes; government spending). I mean, I would have been peeved had a bunch of Republicans asked loaded questions of the Democrats during their CNN/YouTube debate some months ago. While the opposition should have every right to ask questions of a party's candidates, the debates were billed as an opportunity for each party's undecided voters to interact with their party's candidates, and this seems a bit like a bait-and-switch routine. And from a purely pragmatic point of view, did CNN really need to fuel the allegations that it is little more than a less-entertaining, left-wing clone of FOX news?
