My child, too, has progressed in her ability to call for me. Becca started saying "Mama." I know! Except, not really.

Her first babble syllable, as I wrote earlier, was GA. Then she went for BA, and in a dramatic turn of events, DA. "BA BA BA BA...DA DA DA!" (Dan would start to beam and gesture wildly at himself) "DA DA DA GA DA!"

The thing is, it is extremely clear she is not attaching any meaning to this. Early in the morning and after naps, she feels frisky, starts bouncing up and down, and noises come out of her mouth with consonants in the front. Sometimes she imitates noises - I once said "It's Da-da!" and actually prompted a "IH DA DA!" that sent shivers down our spines - but not with any regularity. In California I heard her say "CO CO" (showing an early tendency to be a non-coffee drinker like her parents), but I can't get her to do it again.

So unfortunately, I already knew all that 2 days ago when she started grinning at me and going, "MA MA MA MA!" We pointed at Dan and tried for "Da-da." "MA MA MA MUM!" quoth the Becca. Oh well. It still sounds wonderful.
