Basketball, Bar, & Benjamins

ADVERTISEMENTS
I?m proud of my Bruins for making it to three straight Final Fours, which I suppose is a lot like being a maid of honor in three straight weddings (here?s me sending my Bruins off to the Final Four last year). Seriously though, you can?t be too mad in the face of that kind of success. Watching Memphis play fantastic basketball reminded me a little bit of when Texas beat my beloved Trojans; while I was disappointed they didn?t win, I was grateful for the unprecedented success as well as being in awe of the greatness of the play that ended their run. That Memphis team was pretty freakin? awesome (especially Derrick Rose). Despite the loss, it?s important to have a little perspective and realize that three straight 30 + win seasons and 3 straight Final Four appearance is unprecedented, so I?m enjoying the ascendency while I can. Even if we are the Buffalo Bills of college basketball.

I just came back from the last of the bar prep classes put on by my law school and I have to say that, at a minimum, they weren?t totally boring, which is a big deal for me. The only problem, aside from some of the stuff from the first bar prep session, is that it may be too far in advance to have any practical value. In other words, the interesting things I learned about wills & trusts, will largely be forgotten by me by the time I begin studying for the bar in earnest. But I took notes, so I can review them if I need to. I think the most important thing is that it has been a good experience in transitioning my brain from law school mode to bar exam mode. The more review I get, the better. Also, my weaknesses and strengths are highlighted by the review sessions, which is important. For example, I did 50 practice questions this morning and it?s clear that I have forgotten almost everything I learned about contracts. I did great on Con law, evidence, and pretty good on criminal law. Oh, and I?m horrible on property. So that?s where things stand. But I?m excited to dive into it full time once finals are over.

This is got to be the toughest time of year to be a Democrat. Seriously, all politics aside for a brief moment, I have to imagine that someone whose core political belief relies on raising taxes has to have some moments of doubts when they are paying their own taxes. (And no, you can?t argue that ?repealing? previous tax cuts, like Obama and Clinton both advocate, is not a huge tax increase.) It?s even worse when limousine liberals who, again advocate taking more money out of our pocket, claim that me keeping more of my money isn?t necessary. For example, when commenting on the $109 million they?ve made since they?ve left the White House, Hillary Clinton stated,

?Now don?t get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against rich people,? she said. ?As a matter of fact, my husband, much to my surprise and his, has made a lot of money since he left the White House, by doing what he loves doing most ? talking to people. But we didn?t ask for George Bush?s tax cuts. We didn?t want them, and we didn?t need them.?

You may not need to keep more of your money, but I do. By the way, how much money did Hillary and Bill donate to the government apart from mandated taxes? None. This, of course, is not surprising. If you won the lottery and wanted to donate some of it to accomplish as much good as possible, would you think for a second of donating it to the federal government? It?s a rhetorical question. No one, ever, in their right mind would donate money to the federal government with the idea that would be the best value for their dollar. So why do Democrats continue to advocate that the government is the best way of fixing whatever they feel ails the world? (Sigh). Again, I imagine even democrats think they pay enough taxes, at least this time of year. I just wish the feelings of the season lasted all year round.
