Happy New Year from the AFL-CIO

By Richard L. Trumka

ADVERTISEMENTS

Happy New Year from the 12 million members of the AFL-CIO.

I wish all the best for you and your family, for our unions and for our nation in 2011. And I know you share that wish.

We?re all going to have to work hard?and together?to make it come true.

The holiday season has been a time to pause and remember the reasons we struggle so hard and pursue our aspirations.

And the start of a New Year is a time for us all to recommit to our efforts to turn today?s dreams into tomorrow?s realities.

A bright future stands ahead of us. But the clouded politics of the moment can sometimes hide it from us. Especially now, after an unprecedented flood of corporate cash drastically altered the political landscape in the 2010 elections. We?re seeing the next wave of its impact?corporate-led assaults on working people from state legislatures to Washington, D.C., on every effort to create and retain good jobs and on backbone programs like Social Security and Medicare.

But we?ll keep moving forward. We?ve never charted our course by taking the easy choice. We fight for what we know is right?justice and compassion, and prosperity from Main Street to Wall Street.

Let our guide be our vision of America. I?m talking about a vision of a better, stronger economy, a renewal of the American Dream, so that all of us can earn a fair portion of the good things in life?time with our families, an education for our children, a voice on the job and a comfortable retirement.

I wish you all a safe, healthy and happy New Year.
