Racing statistics

ADVERTISEMENTS

Interesting story with some statistics on racing drivers in Ontario. Here are the highlights:

Police services across the province have charged one motorist every hour of every day since the introduction of Section 172 of the Highway Traffic Act a year ago this month.

The OPP charges [on] average 18 motorists every day for racing a motor vehicle. And that, Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino said, is unacceptable.

As of the anniversary, 8, 549 people had been charged, 6, 440 of them by the OPP. The vast majority (7, 566 or 89.4 per cent) of the automatic driver’s licence suspensions have been for speeding at 50 km/hour or more over the posted limit.

The average age for all drivers sanctioned is 31. A total of 4, 348 (51.4 per cent) were 27 or younger. The most frequently occurring age of sanctioned drivers is 21.

The three oldest drivers to be charged — two men and one woman — were age 85. Nine drivers (seven men and two women) were age 16. There are 197 drivers aged 17 who have been charged.

Fantino pointed out that despite the high number of charges, there have been 121 fewer fatalities this year than in 2007 on roads the OPP patrols, a reduction of 34.2 per cent (233 vs. 354 last year).

Another interesting factlet: Four people have had their licence suspended and their vehicle impounded on the spot three times, and another 42 have been charged twice.
