Mit dem iPhone-Programm DukeMobile ist es nicht nur möglich, die digitalen Sammlungen der Bibliothek durchzuschauen, sondern das Programm bietet auch noch Zugriff auf viele andere Dienste der Duke University. Im Weblog der Bibliothek wird beschrieben, warum die Universität ein iPhone-Programm für die Präsentation nutzt:

Providing an iPhone interface to the collections helps us to reach an audience?whether at Duke or beyond?that is increasingly mobile. By building on to the DukeMobile app (a suite of useful mobile services that has already amassed over 50,000 downloads since its introduction in March), we reach many more people than if we had tried to build a freestanding app on our own.

Natürlich kann man die Sammlung auch im Web anschauen, aber das Programm ist ein sehr gutes Beispiel dafür, dass Bibliotheken - wie so oft beschworen - dahin gehen sollten, wo die NutzerInnen sind und nicht jedesmal das Rad neu erfinden müssen. Das jetzt auch mehr und mehr deutsche Bibliotheken auf YouTube unterwegs sind, ist ein Beleg dafür, dass langsam ein Umdenken stattfindet.
