China Blog Awards Time

By Stan

ADVERTISEMENTS

Yes, it’s time for needless self promotion from your favorite China bloggers, motivated by the annual awards thing from Chinalyst.

I’m a cynical bastard, so I don’t go in for the usual competitive stuff, but when the voting starts, I do like to write a preemptive post before people send me emails and ask which blogs are my favorites. Please note the following:

1. I’m not going to write a list of my favorite China blogs. I cite to my favorites all the time, so there is no need.

2. I’m a lazy blogger who does not update as often as I should. But I admire those who do. If I were to vote, I would choose a China blog that is consistently updated with detailed information. My usual post, whereby I write a snarky comment about something I read in the China Daily, does not count as detailed information — witty perhaps (on a good day), but not all that informative.

3. My favorite blogs are issue-intensive blogs that cover certain subjects in depth. Note that doing so takes more time and is more difficult. The guys who consistently focus on logistics, environmental stuff, law, etc. — that’s yeoman’s work.

4. Don’t be too tough on folks who use their blogs for business purposes. I get quite a lot of email bemoaning self-promotion on other blogs. Hey, we all gotta put food on the table, and times are tough. If the content is good, you can deal with a little advertising once in a while.

5. A request to my fellows in the greater China blogging community: how about no fighting this year? A lot of bad shit is going down on a global scale, and it puts things in perspective. Let’s keep it real.
