No oral arguments are scheduled at the Court this week.
On Monday, the D.C. Circuit Court will hold a hearing to review a judge’s order to release 17 Chinese Muslim Uighurs from Guantanamo Bay into the United States, and a federal District judge will hold a hearing on the government’s duty to disclose information responding to a claim that a detainee was sent by the U.S. to Morocco to be tortured.
On Tuesday, the Justices will hold a private conference, orders from which could be released that afternoon. To view our list of petitions to watch at the conference, click here.
By Wedneday, the government must file its brief in opposition in Northwest Austin Municipal District Number One v. Mukasey (08-322), an appeal challenging the constitutionality of the extension of Voting Rights Act’s “preclearance” requirement. On Wednesday, detainees’ lawyers are to file responses to the Justice Department’s wide-ranging challenge to the procedures laid down for habeas cases involving some 200 detainees.
On Thursday, the Court will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving.
The petitioner’s merits brief is due Wednesday in United States v. Navajo Nation (07-1410). No respondents’ merits briefs are due this week.
