Add the Longfin smelt to the Sacramento delta pile

By Keith Rizzardi

ADVERTISEMENTS

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune environmentalist press releases, and Bay Area Indymedia, the California Fish and Game Commission in San Diego voted 3-0 on February 7, 2008 to designate the longfin smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys), as a "candidate species” pursuant to the California Endangered Species Act.

California state and federal agencies working in the Sacramento Delta have long been struggling with the difficulties of managing a watershed for human consumptive uses while at the same time maintaining a viable ecosystem for Delta smelt, shad, salmonids, and other species.   The longfin smelt is yet another native fish that has dropped to record low numbers in the Delta.  Its decline may provide even more restrictions for regional water users and agencies implementing the Operating Criteria and Plan (OCAP) for the Central Valley Project and State Water Project.
