Elder Mediation and the Social Work Case Manager

By dvanar

ADVERTISEMENTS

My colleague, Marcie Cooper, a geriatric care manager and co-founder of the Elder Mediation Center of New Jersey, recently published an article in the newsletter of the Aging Section, a specialty practice section of the National Association of Social Workers. The article, an excellent overview of the role of the social work case manager in the elder mediation process, is entitled ?An Ethical Approach to Elder Mediation:  The Role of the Certified Social Work Case Manager?. Forrest Hong, PhD, LCSW, Chair of the Aging Section and the newsletter editor, describes Marcie?s article as follows:

The fields of geriatric care management and social work train and certify professionals skilled in elder mediation, as described in this article by Marcie Cooper. In this growing field, social workers help families in dispute and conflict with an aging parent?s long-term care. She discusses issues dealing with adjusting to change, determination of mental competency, and psychosocial functioning. As Cooper shows, social workers with the appropriate training can function in either role, as the mediator, or as the professional care manager.
