: BoardBuzz: NSBA's Daily WeblogWhere the wind blows
Some schools across the USA are blowing BoardBuzz away with their green practices. As reported in USA Today, two turbines in Spirit Lake, Iowa are transforming wind gusts to provide enough power to meet half of the school districts electrical needs.
More than 80 schools across the country have installed wind turbines, and now the Wind for Schools program, sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Powering America program, is working to bring smaller turbines to several states, including Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska and South Dakota.
Wind for Schools' mission is to educate both students and communities about wind power, by using smaller turbines. The goal of the program is to indentify schools that want to participate and to add five turbines to each state each year. Along with the hardware is a curriculum for K through 12th graders about wind power and the practices of the wind industry.
Interested in other green practices? Check out BoardBuzz's past entries, found here and here. Has your school district utilized wind turbines to provide electrical power yet? Let us know how it's working by leaving a comment.
